Not far from the captivating town of Nafplion one can find Nemea, the mythical land where the legendary Agiorgitiko, Nemea’s wine was born.For more than 3.000 years wine producing in Nemea has been part of the Greek mythology surrounding the half-god Heracles, who slews the Nemean lion.
According to this legend, the blood of that lion stained the very vines of Fliasios grapes – the ancient name of Agiorgitiko -. The ancient wine of Fliasios, the “royal wine” was reputed to be a favorite of Agamemnon.
In 1869, the first Agiorgitiko wine was bottled by the ‘TRIPOU Brothers’ and was exported to Germany, England and America.
Nowadays, Nemea is considered the crown jewel of the new Greek wine industry, one of the most important,well-known and well-balanced wine regions of Greece in terms of quality, quantity and image. There the Agiorgitiko grape has been producing wines famous for their unique deep dark ruby color, complex aroma and long, velvety palate for centuries.
Nemea’s vineyards are situated in three different terroir subzones, ranging between 250-800m above sea level. The terroirs impart unique characteristics into the grapes affecting the taste of the local wines and giving rise to a huge outstanding variety in style.
